First steps to food help
If you are in a sudden crisis over feeding yourself and possibly your family, you can access food bank resources. Except in exceptional circumstances, you do not do so directly but through one of the Referral Partners. See the Referrers. If you are already in contact with one of them, go straight there because they will already have your details and probably knowledge of the crisis you are in. If that is not the case, please contact the Referrer dealing with matters best matching your underlying problem. Every effort will be made to meet with you as soon as possible. Referrers propose what they consider is appropriate, having discussed the underlying problem.
STEP 1: Contact a Referrer
If you are known to a Referrer because you are being, or have been, helped by them, do go to them. They should already have your details. Otherwise contact a Referrer that matches the underlying circumstance that is the cause of your emergency food need.
Discuss your circumstances with the Referrer. They are there to understand the underlying causes of your food need. Wherever possible, the intention is to help you take practical steps to prevent circumstances repeating.
If you are referred to foodbank4whitby, basic contact details and an indication of your underlying crisis will need to be passed to them. You will see what is written down and you will be asked to agree to this by signing. Without that approval, the food bank cannot accept the referral.
You will be given a referral form to take to the f4w Welcome & Distribution Centre in central Whitby. You will be given details of where and when the food bank is open.
Attend the Welcome Centre with the referral. We hope you understand why we need to be sure that only those referred receive the parcel. There is a behaviour policy, and the decisions by staff must be followed in the interests of all parties that may be present. It is a volunteer work and is not statutory. However, foodbank4Whitby wants to help as much as it can within our rules.
Sit and enjoy some refreshments and a chat. Say as much or as little as you wish. There are no catches and, like the Referrers, foodbank4Whitby wants to help you.
