What roles do volunteers perform?
Volunteers undertake the vast majority of the work. They and those they are working to help are neighbours in terms of living in Whitby & District. So, it’s by people, for people. Volunteers help collect goods; staff the warehouse; welcome those who are referred to collect food parcels; provide refreshments; offer a listening ear; do administration; fundraise; author leaflets and newsletters; help with web-site content; serve as worker trustees and more!
The Warehouse Team receives, sorts, checks and parcels the food for the neighbours who have been referred. Groups and organisations that donate are recorded so that the Administration Team can thank them.
The Meeters & Greeters are the face of foodbank4whitby. Not the promotional front, but those who welcome and work with people who come for a food parcel. All neighbours together. With the Referrers, the Meeters & Greeters are there to help people see a route back from their crisis situation. These volunteers need special qualities that empathise as well as sympathise with those they greet, understanding different personalities and needs.
The Administration Team has a wide range of tasks from keeping up to date with correspondence (mainly emails), recording donations and thanking donors, keeping track on the volunteers, arranging meetings and much else besides. The team is a support hub.
F4W wants to be a channel that enables the wider community, including the business community, to reach out to people in need that they serve, not knowing circumstances. Building trusting relationships between organisations takes time but creates win-win-win situations.
The Communications Team, like the Administration Team, handshakes closely with all the other teams. Making sure that newsletters are produced and distributed, collating the circulation lists for outgoing correspondence, keeping in touch with volunteers, donors and supporters. Working with the media to publicise f4w appropriately and at the appropriate time. And also keeping this web-site updated.
The Events Team does what it says. It orchestrates events on the ground with f4w volunteers but also external parties. An event might be a supermarket collection day, a social to bring together volunteers, supporters and donors, a Town Centre display, whatever! We hope the Event Team surprises us.
The Fundraising Team has an important role to raise money because there are things we do need to pay for. The Team seeks out and applies for grants from a range of trusts (both local and national); generates ideas with the Awareness Team for raising the profile of foodbank4whitby and raising funds; organises fundraising charitable events.
